Hey there, fellow playroom design enthusiasts! Today, I’m excited to share the amazing makeover of our kids’ playroom. When it comes to creating a space that’s fun and inspiring, choosing the right paint colors is key! Join me as I take you through our journey of painting and decorating our playroom, and how each color choice added to the playful and imaginative vibe.
Choosing the Perfect Palette
From the start, we wanted colors that would be both lively and calming, perfect for sparking creativity while keeping things calm(-ish). After flipping through a ton of color samples, we landed on Cider Spice by Behr as our main color. It’s warm and cozy, setting the stage for all the adventures our playroom holds.
Accent Colors: Bringing the Mural to Life
To really bring out the whimsy and get our kiddos’ imaginations going, we picked a bunch of accent colors for a flower mural. Adding a mural to the wall is a great way to fill up wall space without spending a ton of money on wall décor! All our accent colors are also by Behr.
- Blackout: Adds depth and makes the mural pop. I used this color for the outlines.
- Gray Squirrel: Soft and soothing, balancing out the brighter shades.
- Rolling Pebble: Keeps things cool and calm in the room.
- Sculptor Clay: Earthy and light. Helps tie in our white Ikea storage with the room.
- Aged Beige: Warm and comforting, tying everything together.
- Sage Garden: A fresh green that brings a bit of the outdoors inside.
- Pure Earth: Natural and rich, adding depth to the whole vibe.
Full transparency, a good chunk of these colors (all of them) were just leftover paint samples that I had in my garage… lol. But it worked out great!
The Painting Process
We dove right in once we had our colors sorted. Here’s how we brought our vision to life:
- Preparation: filled in any holes in the walls with wall putty (and there were a lot) and waited for it to dry.
- Painting Day: With brushes and rollers in hand, we started with our Cider Spice paint! It went on smooth and cozy, instantly making the room feel warm and ready for creativity. It took me 2 days with kids running around.
- Mural Magic: After the base coat dried, we moved on to the mural. I sketched all the flowers and leaves first with pencil, then painted over each one with the appropriate accent color. After that, I outlined the details of the flowers with our black paint (Black Out).
Earthy Tones and Inspiration
We loved the earthy feel all our Behr colors gave us—it really set the mood for playtime and kept things feeling grounded and natural. The mix of warm and cool shades made the room feel just right for our little ones to dream and create.
Tips for Painting Your Kids Playroom
- Get Them Involved: Let your kids help pick out colors (Or just let them think they are helping lol) It makes them feel like part of the team. We also designated an area on our walls (behind the doors) for out kids to draw on. They wanted to doodle flowers too!
- Stay Safe: Look for paints with low VOCs to keep the air clean and the room healthy. This was super important to me because I always paint with kids in the house.
- Add Some Texture: Try different painting techniques to give your walls more personality! We really got our texture from the black detailing on the flowers.
Have Fun!
Changing up our kids’ playroom with these awesome Behr colors has been a blast for our family. It’s not just about making things look good—it’s about giving our kids a space that’s their own.
I hope our journey gives you some inspiration for your own painting projects. Remember, creating a space where your kids can play and grow (and keeping it aesthetic lol) is the real reward.
Happy painting!
