Fun Fact About Puppet Shows
Did you know that puppet shows date back thousands of years? The ancient Greeks used puppets in theater performances as early as 5th century BC! Puppetry has evolved over time and continues to captivate audiences of all ages worldwide.
Materials Needed for a DIY Kids Puppet Theatre
Gather these supplies from your local dollar store to get started:
- 4 foam poster boards
- Duck tape
- Scissors
- Marker or Pencil
- Ruler
- Paint
- Optional: Extra Cardboard and Glue Gun(for extra detail and molding)
- Optional: Paint Primer (helps paint adhere to the duck tape)
Step-by-Step Tutorial: Creating Your DIY Kids Puppet Theatre
Step 1: Tape All Four Boards Together
First, lay out the foam poster boards in a row. Use the duck tape to securely tape all four boards together vertically along their edges. This will form the base structure of your puppet theatre.
Step 2: Cut Out the Stage Window
Using your scissors (or a hobby knife), carefully cut out a rectangular window from the center of the middle two poster boards. Make sure to keep the rectangle intact, as you’ll use it for the top of the puppet stage later on.
Step 3: Trace and Cut Out the Leftover Poster Board
Take the leftover pieces of foam poster board and trace some rounded upper molding to add some height to the center two poster boards. Cut them out using scissors. Refer to the image below to see how I did mine.
Step 4: Tape Extra Pieces to the Top
Now, tape these additional pieces to the top of the two center poster boards. This will enhance the overall structure of your puppet theatre.
Step 5: Prime the Poster Boards
Before painting, it’s a good idea to prime the poster boards to ensure that the paint adheres smoothly to the duck tape.
Step 6: Decorate and Paint as Desired
Let your creativity shine! Use paint, markers, or other decorative materials to personalize your puppet theatre. Encourage your kids to join in and add their own artistic flair to the project.
Step 7: Add “Molding” to Your Puppet Theatre (Optional)
If you want to add some extra flair to your puppet theatre, grab any extra cardboard you have around the house. Use hot glue to adhere them to the main stage as decorative molding. I chose to add the classic “Comedy and Tragedy” theatre masks to ours.
