As a mom of two little ones (ages 2 and 4), I’m always looking for ways to keep toys organized and playtime fun. Our favorite toys lately? Duplo blocks! But as much as I love seeing their creativity, stepping on stray blocks? Not so much. Enter my latest weekend project: a DIY kids Lego table with Ikea Lego storage.
This table combines play space with smart storage, using the Ikea Trofast system and peel-and-stick brick base plates. The bins are perfect for keeping pieces sorted, and the entire top becomes a play area. I even added photos to the bins to help my kids learn how to tidy up. Whether your kids are building with Duplos or classic Lego bricks, this table works for both!
Why I Love This DIY Kids Lego Table
Here’s why this project is a must-try for any parent:
- Kid-Friendly Design: It’s sized perfectly for toddlers and preschoolers, and it can grow with them as they transition to smaller Legos.
- Organization Made Easy: The Ikea Lego storage bins keep pieces off the floor and in their place (most of the time).
- All-in-One Solution: One order of the peel-and-stick base plates (link below) covers the ENTIRE top of the Trofast, creating a seamless play surface.
Materials
Here’s what you’ll need to recreate this functional play station:
- Ikea Trofast storage unit and bins (I used one with three smaller bins and three larger bins).
- Peel-and-stick base plates (Duplo or Lego-sized, depending on your needs).
- Box Cutter (to cut base plates)

How to Make Your DIY Kids Lego Table
Step 1: Assemble Your Trofast Unit
The Ikea Trofast system is a staple for playroom organization. I chose the model with three smaller bins on the top row and three larger bins below, which offers plenty of space to sort and store all kinds of Lego pieces.
Step 2: Attach the Base Plates
Peel-and-stick base plates make this project a breeze. I used Duplo-compatible plates to match my kids’ blocks, but you can use smaller ones for classic Legos. The best part? One order of the plates (linked in the materials section) is enough to cover the entire Trofast top!
Before sticking them on, align the plates for a perfect fit. Score them with a box cutter and snap them apart if necessary. Once you’re happy with the layout, peel off the backing and press them firmly onto the surface.
Step 3: Organize the Bins
To make clean-up easier, I taped photos of what belongs in each bin to the front of the bins. For example, I labeled a bin with a photo of Duplo bricks, another with figures, and one with vehicles. The larger bins are perfect for storing bulk pieces or unfinished builds.
Customizations
- Paint the Trofast: A coat of paint can help the table match your home decor.
- Upgrade the Labels: Use clear adhesive pockets or printable labels to make swapping out bin contents easy.
Enjoy Your Fresh Lego Storage Solution!
This DIY kids Lego table with Ikea Lego storage has been a game-changer for our playroom. It keeps things organized, encourages creative play, and looks so cute too! My kids love having a dedicated space to build their masterpieces, and I love not stepping on Legos every five minutes.
If you’re ready to tackle your own version, I’ve linked all the resources you’ll need to make this project super simple in the materials section. I’d love to see your take on it—send me photos if you try it out!
Happy building, and good luck keeping those bins organized (we’re still working on that part!).
